Western vs. Indian Number Systems

International Formatting (Short Scale)

The Western/International numbering scale groups numbers in sets of three digits. The main markers are thousands, millions, billions, trillions, and so forth.

1,000,000 = One Million

Indian Numbering System

The Indian numbering scale groups the first three digits, then proceeds in sets of two digits. The primary markers are Lakhs and Crores.

1,00,000 = One Lakh
1,00,00,000 = One Crore

How to Write a Check: Spelling Out Financial Values

Writing a personal or commercial bank check requires you to fill out the amount in both numeric figures and written words. In the event of a discrepancy, banking regulations dictate that the written word value represents the legal amount to be paid.

When filling out the word line on a check:

  • Start at the far left edge of the line to prevent unauthorized individuals from inserting extra words (e.g. changing "Fifty" to "One Hundred Fifty").
  • Write the cents part as a fraction over 100 (e.g. and 50/100 Cents or and 50/100 Dollars).
  • Draw a straight line through the remaining blank space to the word "Dollars" printed at the end of the line.

English Grammar Rules for Spelling Numbers

Hyphenation Rules

When writing two-word numbers between 21 and 99, always separate the words with a hyphen.

โ€ข Correct: twenty-five, forty-eight, ninety-nine
โ€ข Incorrect: twenty five, forty eight

Using the word "And"

In formal Western English, the word "and" is strictly reserved for denoting a **decimal point** or **fractional part** of a number, rather than separating hundreds from tens.

โ€ข Standard: one hundred twenty-three Dollars and fifty Cents
โ€ข Alternate: one hundred and twenty-three (common in British English, but omitted in formal US check writing).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Lakhs make a Million?
Ten Lakhs (1,000,000 or 10,00,000) are exactly equal to One Million.
What is a Crore?
A Crore is a unit in the Indian numbering system equal to ten million (10,000,000). It is written as 1,00,00,000.
What is the difference between short scale and long scale number names?
The **Short Scale** (used in the US, UK, and modern international setups) increases by factors of a thousand, where a billion is 10โน (a thousand million). The **Long Scale** (used in continental Europe) increases by factors of a million, where a billion is 10ยนยฒ (a million million), and 10โน is called a milliard. Our tool uses the short scale.
Does the converter support negative numbers or decimals?
Yes, our tool fully supports decimals and negative numbers. Decimal digits are spelled out individually (e.g. "point seven eight") while negative inputs prefix the output with the word "minus".
How do I write a check with cents?
On the words line, write the full dollar amount in words, followed by "and", then the cents as a fraction over 100. For example: "One Hundred Twenty-Five and 50/100". Finally, fill the remaining line space with a straight line.
